Panic in IDPs Camp as NEMA Staff Down Tools
Stafff of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Borno State has joined their counterparts in other States of the federation and Abuja in an indefinite strike to protest against ill treatment and non payment of allowances and other entitlements by the new Director General.
This development has put fears on the minds of thousands of internally-displaced persons, IDPs, taking refuge at various resettlement camps being collectively managed by the state government, humanitarian partners and NEMA.
A source confirmed that NEMA staff decided to join the strike due to what he described as “lackadaisical attitude of the Director General over non-payment of allowances, withholding welfare agreement signed between workers, management and the agency.”
The source said the workers had ordered their colleagues to shutdown services across the state, including those working in IDP camps.
Some IDPs at Bakassi, Dalori I & II camps in Maiduguri metropolis, expressed shock over the strike. They argued that the agency workers were not supposed to down tools for even a minute, considering their immense contribution in catering for their plights, as they are in dire need of food, healthcare, clothing and shelter. The IDPs appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari and all other arms of government to investigate the circumstances that led to the strike, with a view to punishing culprits.
The strike will hinder feeding and other logistics in the IDPs camp
